BIOGRAPHY OF SONJA (JENSEN) HALVORSON Sonja Anna (Jensen) Halvorson was born to Gladys Marie Rowe and Gerhard Imer Jensen on July 13th 1939 in Canton, South Dakota. She attended Augustana Academy High School in Canton, SD. She furthered her studies at Sioux Valley Hospital school of nursing. She was a camp nurse at Shetek and Mount Carmel summer camps. She attended (and was nurse at) Lutheran Bible Institute, where she met James Paul Halvorson and later married him on December 27th 1963. On Christmas Break from LBI, James had offered to give her a ride back from Golden Valley, MN to Canton, SD. He remembers singing with Sonja all the way to Canton and thought to himself that she would be fun to travel with. James and Sonja had three children. Peter '66, Karla '68, and Sara '76. Sonja worked as a nurse at: Sioux Valley Hospital, Canton Inwood Hospital (now Sanford Hospital), Hospitals in Ames Iowa, Northfield, MN, Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul (which is also where she recovered from her surgery in 2016), Lyngblomsten nursing home and as a nursing supervisor at Sholom Home. She also worked for a time at the state prison in Stillwater. At all sites, she was motivated to show the love of Jesus to everyone she encountered. She is preceded in death by her parents Gladys Marie Rowe and Gerhart Jensen and her brother Johan Jensen. She is survived by siblings: Paul Jensen, Solveig Loken, Synnove Pederson, and Esther Anderson; By her children, Peter Halvorson (Marcy), Karla Jerpseth Halvorson (James), and Sara Halvorson; And grandchildren Christian Halvorson, Soren Halvorson, Leif Halvorson, Annika Halvorson, Kristopher Jerpseth, Anna Jerpseth, and Elsa Jerpseth. We are thankful for the great care she had at the university of MN hospitals and at Sholom Home of St. Paul.
